About this role

UM is a global media agency within IPG Mediabrands operating in over 100 countries. As Strategy Director you will join at a pivotal moment to build a more ambitious and distinctive strategy capability centered on Stand Against Bland.

You will help clients make sharper growth choices and identify where their brands can stand apart. That thinking converts into transformative media strategies that drive measurable business outcomes across a portfolio of clients.

You will lead the strategic story from diagnosis through planning, activation and measurement. Close collaboration with Insights, Analytics, Audiences, Planning and Activation teams ensures strategy shapes the work rather than remaining in the deck.

The role carries Director-level autonomy and authority. You will shape strategic approaches for UK pitches, interpret global strategies for the local market and deliver commercially sharp, culturally relevant work that reflects UM’s ambition.

Requirements

  • Sharp strategic judgement and creative ambition to deliver breakthrough media work.
  • Analytical confidence and strong storytelling to move from insight to idea.
  • Leadership behaviours that bring cross-functional teams along through autonomy and collaboration.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills for senior client and internal conversations.
  • Experience turning audience understanding into measurable planning principles and activation.
  • Confidence working with data-led audience solutions and measurement frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Combine sharp strategic judgement, creative ambition, analytical confidence and strong storytelling to produce breakthrough work.
  • Turn complex business, brand, audience and category challenges into clear strategic choices from diagnosis to direction.
  • Identify the highest-value audiences for growth and translate motivations and behaviours into planning principles.
  • Collaborate with Planning, Data Solutions, Insights and Analytics to define, build and activate audiences using Acxiom and Flywheel partnerships.
  • Lead senior conversations with strong presentation and facilitation skills that bring teams along.
  • Shape strategic approaches for UK pitches and interpret global strategies for the UK market.
  • Ensure strategy influences activation and measurement, not just the initial recommendation.
